CASE STUDIES

Central Contra Costa Sanitary District

THE CHALLENGE

Central San inspects over 150,000 feet of sewer lines annually using internal crews and external contractors. However, their legacy inspection system created major inefficiencies. Data was fragmented across systems, contractor and internal workflows were disconnected, and the existing software lacked web access and was tied to specific hardware. This made it difficult to consolidate data into their Esri GIS, caused bottlenecks in review workflows, and limited staff visibility into inspection results.

THE SOLUTION

Central San transitioned to ITpipes CoreVision, selected for its browser-based interface and seamless integration with AMS and Esri ArcGIS. The solution centralized data from contractors and internal crews, enabling cloud-to-cloud syncing and eliminating manual uploads. Work orders are now issued and tracked through AMS, while inspection data and videos are automatically accessible through GIS-linked views—streamlining QA/QC, improving data accuracy, and saving staff significant time.

THE RESULT

Central San reduced review time from months to just one week, while eliminating manual data reconciliation and boosting inspection accuracy. They now maintain a consistent 10-year inspection cycle, helping prevent sewer spills and enabling proactive asset management.

Charlotte Water

THE CHALLENGE

Charlotte Water manages over 4,400 miles of sanitary sewer lines and serves a population of more than one million. Despite inspecting nearly 1,000 miles annually—well above regulatory requirements—they struggled with fragmented data and inconsistent workflows between in-house and contractor crews. Manual processes and lack of integration created inefficiencies, limiting visibility and slowing response times.

THE SOLUTION

To modernize operations, Charlotte Water partnered with ITpipes to deploy a fully integrated inspection solution. ITpipes delivered configurable templates, training, and QA/QC processes, while the CoreVision platform connected seamlessly with Esri GIS and AMS. Now, inspection data is automatically uploaded and synced daily, with work orders issued and tracked through an intuitive, browser-based interface.

THE RESULT

With centralized, real-time access to inspection data, Charlotte Water cut annual sanitary sewer spills from over 500 in 2003 to just 140. Field crews identify root intrusions, prioritize maintenance, and select rehab methods based on verified pipe conditions. The organization now operates with the lowest spill rate in recent history—even as population and pipe mileage continue to rise.

Make Better Decisions with ITpipes SmartTabs

ITpipes CoreVision comes with search, sort, and grouping tools that will quickly provide intelligent reporting. With unlimited drill-down filtering and querying on any data collected, ITpipes dynamically updates SmartTabs, as new inspections sync, to give you instant reports. And the same reports have drill-down color-coding displayed on the map, updating real-time as new inspections sync!

Discover the endless possibilities with SmartTabs.

Centralize Your Inspections

Scheduling and asset details transfer to the inspector for rapid inspections. Completed inspections transfer in for quick sharing and easy inspection access!

Link all your portable systems or incoming contractor work to a central project. Set Sync to work with multiple inspection databases, such as sewer and storm or manhole and culverts.

Seamless Data Delivery with ITpipes Contractor Sync

With ITpipes Sync, your inspection footage and data are automatically sent to your client’s CoreVision—no file transfers, no manual uploads, no delays. Cities and agencies get instant access to the information they need, organized exactly how they want it, with no extra work on your end.

Sync on demand or on a schedule to organize inspections automatically and save operator time and effort! It’s a simple way to streamline collaboration, reduce unnecessary back-and-forth communication, and deliver a better experience to the municipalities you serve.

Streamline Workflows With Integration to Asset Management Systems

ITpipes automatically integrates pipe inspections into your preferred Asset Management System! Going far beyond simple data transfer, this integration not only covers unplanned/emergency inspections, but live field scheduling from a map, rescheduling of inspections, inspection completion, upload and closing, and inspection sharing.

Integration to AMS provides comprehensive inspection access direct from your AMS, using ITpipes CoreVision.  Each AMS does have different features for integration, therefore we are glad to provide details upon request.

ITpipes integrates with mapping and several AMS vendor platforms, such as Esri, Cartegraph, Cityworks, infor, CentralSquare (formerly Lucity), NEXGEN, Beehive Industries and Tyler Technologies.

From CCTV Inspections to Confident Capital Plans: Introducing the AutoDesk Info360 Asset + ITpipes SmartVision Integration

ITpipes’ SmartVision technology combines FieldVision for capturing high-quality CCTV inspections in the field and CoreVision for managing, reviewing, and reporting inspection results, providing sewer and stormwater utilities with clean, organized, accurate and reliable inspection data. Info360 Asset uses that inspection data to support condition scoring, risk evaluation, deterioration modeling, and rehabilitation planning.

When these systems are connected, inspection findings directly inform how assets are prioritized and funded. Each capital recommendation can be traced back to specific inspection evidence and risk drivers. This reduces reliance on assumptions and helps ensure that capital plans reflect the actual state of the system. Why Waiting to Modernize Your Inspection Program Is More Expensive Than You Think

Why Waiting to Modernize Your Inspection Program Is More Expensive Than You Think

There is a version of this conversation that happens in almost every public works organization at some point. Leadership acknowledges that the current inspection workflow has inefficiencies. Everyone agrees that something should change. And then the changes get deferred, again, because the timing is never right and other “priorities” monopolize the time.

Budget cycles are complicated. Staff bandwidth is limited. A major project is about to start, or just finished, and now is not the moment. There is always a reasonable explanation for waiting.

But waiting has a cost too. It is just harder to recognize because it is not a number on a paper.. Continue Reading Why Waiting to Modernize Your Inspection Program Is More Expensive Than You Think

Breaking the Bottlenecks: Where Inspection Programs Actually Lose Time

Breaking the Bottlenecks: Where Inspection Programs Actually Lose Time

Talk to almost any public works director about inspection backlogs, and the conversation eventually lands in the same place: we need more people.

It is an understandable conclusion. Crews are stretched. Regulatory pressure is intensifying. Infrastructure is aging faster than it can be assessed. Adding headcount feels like the most direct path to doing more work.

But in most organizations, the bottleneck is not the number of people. It is what those people are forced to do with their time.

Wastewater inspection programs are riddled with friction points that consume productive hours without producing any useful output. Manual data reconciliation. Batch file transfers. Inconsistent defect coding. Systems that do not talk to each other. These are not staffing problems. They are workflow problems.

Understanding where that friction lives is the first step toward eliminating it. Here are the five places where lean inspection programs most commonly lose capacity, and what it actually takes to get it back. Continue Reading Breaking the Bottlenecks: Where Inspection Programs Actually Lose Time
